So a quiet saturday on the shoot

It didnt start out wet, in fact the rain we had yesterday looked all blown out, big mistake, showers all morning and missing 4 guns meant we had holes in the line that the birds slipped through. Bag for the day turned out to be a Woodpigeon and a Jay so well done the Croydon boys; Sadly Nigel and I missed an easy cock pheasant, I hope I didnt put him off.
Now some of you may recall the series earlier this year of Darwin award Candidates, thanks to Toni I can restert the nominations;

Perhaps someone can educate me as to the country of origin?

Last night

Or more precisely this morning I was in Acton dealing with a very dense urban fox.

He isnt a pretty sight this morning as I go to the dump, .17 HMR top of the napper;
The funny thing is he walked into a trap that wasnt baited, strange fellah, it seems him and his brethren have been burgling a house and trashing it for a few nights. Well this is one that wont be found in the householders bedroom!

Last night the phone rang

I happened to be up to my elbows in deer skin and bones, Richard called and asked for the best way to dispose of a stroppy ram that had escaped its owners farm and was trashing the Orchards.

"Use enough rifle!" Ok I actually said use the .17 but have the .243 as back up.

The lad deferred the shot with the .17 but I tell you this 100 grains of .243 certainly makes mutton;

Back from work

The pups are starting to raom around the whelping box, loads of character appearing, only one name confirmed so far;
Pretty little things eh?

Somehow they prefer their vet bedding upside down!
Nutmeg is the second from the left here;

Not sure about the others;

Testing the 22-250 loads for Myles weatherby vanguard today, I brought along my Ruger 77Mk11HBVT so I wasnt bored when the Weatherby was cooling between strings of shots;

bench set up;

Ammo stash to hand;

Targets set up courtesy of Richard, he also brought along a .308 and a .243 to carry out final pre stalk tests;

Plenty to shoot at;

The Ruger 77Mk1 full stock in .243;

Park wood shoot day

The shoot was a little late in starting today, thanks to someone managing to write of a nice fallow buck in Ashdown Forest with their car;

video

The tally was seven birds, two cocks and five hens, admittedly one cock Steve managed to get with his car on the way in! Never mind it all goes in the book and the pot;

Apparently we wont need to buy sausages for a while!

As the importers of Bushnells scope cam

Have for some reason decided to stop importing it I am reduced to looking around, whilst its not really what I want a little work would make this a great training tool.

W day looms near

I have taken some temporary work to tide me over so this week see the last of my afternoons and evenings free. Alan and I travelled into the weald to stalk some of the largest Fallow Bucks I have ever seen. Just sitting behind the trailer on the pasture and of course they all walk out in front of us;

video

Actually after sunset the sods all walked out behind us, luckily with an almost full moon we were able to asses the does and Buck behind us and plan another visit to knock him off. Alan sits tight covered up;

The old trailer;
Yes he's another left hooker, I just seem to attract them;
Sunset on this part of the weald is spectacular to say the least;

At the Zoo?

Ok feeding time it is, or rather feed collection time, a whole tonne of the stuff and without the help of Ben and David I wouldnt have managed it in a day let alone 2 hours;

2 trips to the magic grainstore and we are set for the rest of the season. That may even see us up until the birds are delivered again. Who knows? I have some extra feeders ready so even though all the existing lot are full we can make a start next week!

The pups are coming on well, nice to see Mum taking a break from them;

Still no closer to naming them yet!

Today I have mainly been

Recycling, thats correct you heard me right. Recycling, after all its a pity that all I can do with the rimfire brass is weigh it in for more lead!
Today saw me catching up on some prime feed for the Rigby followed by load development for Myles at the Outdoorsman;

Lets face it there's a few examples to check against;

Recycling this way makes me feel good all over!

Not opening day per se, but 1st day of the season for the shoot

So we (the dogs and I) trundled along the A27 to Winchester, grabbed the farm land rover and had a great day out;
The traditional first drive, down the cover strip to the river;
Spartacus was on form and enjoying himself;
Macey looked very good, Tris is really doing well with her;

Happy snaps time?

Not a big bag but a nice day to start the season here;

Blanking in time;

Puppy update

Cody annd her 4 pups are looking good, tails docked and dew claws removed. Eyes arent open yet;

More pics to follow!

Sorry I missed the BBQ!

Driving along Hastings seafront and you can still smell it, over a week after some loon set fire to the pier it still smells like a freshly put out BBQ;

Traffic along here has never been great, this only adds to the mess;

video

The traffic along the seafront is still a mess and I suspect will be for a long time;

So the season seemed to get underway

On what turned out to be the warmest saturday this month! We had a good turnout birds, beaters and guns. 9 birds, 4 1/2 brace so happy with that. If all guns had been there we would have had less holes in the line.
Counting the fired cases added up to an average of 3 per bird. I'm happy with that!
Well done to Edmund and keep it up, your Dad does need lessons! As do I!

Next weekend is off, see you all the week after that!

Cody and the pups.

So I stagger into bed after an egg banjo attempt to soak up 4 hours of beer tasting only to be woken what seems like five minutes later (it was actually 0100) to be told that Cody our Chocolate Roan cocker was in Labour;

video

This year we are stuck with a red lamp, although due to the hour we were struggling to stay awake and found more than once that she had delivered them herself;

video

Mother and pups are doing well;

So 4 entries in the litter registration to do, suggestions for names welcome, two of each sex!

Eastbourne Beer Festival 2010

So tickets were bought, sheckels scraped together and Ben and I wandered off to the thursday evening opening session. Plenty of sights to see; I even found something for the Tea Lady;
Live entertainment as usual, this year no oompah band but some hill billies, maybe from hailsham or Pevensey Levels;

This year I was accompanied by Jon, using up some holiday so no early start and commute today then;

Ben didnt take too long to settle in, despite us urging him to drink 1/3rds it had little effect;

A little live footage;

video

And a little more before we got a lift home, 4 hours of Milds and Porters plaid havoc with my guts this morning!
